Blocks acting on drums; blocks and shoes. - A vehicle brake comprises three or more shoes f, hinged on pins f<3> passing through the shoe flanges and flanges b<3>, b<33> on fixed sleeves b<1>, b<11>, which are adapted to be engaged with the brake drum when rollers f<4>, mounted on spindles f<5> carried between the shoe flanges f<1>, are engaged by peaks c<3> on a floating cam comprising an annular part c<1> and flanges c<2>, c<22>. The part c<1> of the cam is mounted with sufficient clearance on a sleeve d having a flange d<1> extended at d<2> to form a brake lever, the flanges c<2>, d<1>, of the cam and the sleeve d respectively, being coupled together by means of a plate e formed with recesses e<1> to receive pins c<4>, d<3> on the flanges c<2>, d<1>, so that the. cam is free to float to equalize the forces exerted by the shoes. Normally the shoes are held out of contact with the drum by springs f<6>, their inward movement being limited by threaded studs f<7> passing through the. pivots f<3>. In a modification, each roller f<4> is carried at one end of a lever pivoted intermediate its ends between the shoe flanges, the other end of the lever carrying a threaded stud adapted to engage the pivot f<3> of the adjacent shoe, to limit the shoe clearance. When more than three shoes are employed, a pair of cams is preferably used, both being simultaneously operated but each being capable of independent floating movement.
