Band; blocks acting on drums. - The frictional members of a drum brake are free to move circumferentiallv in relation to the operating-mechanism therefor until arrested by stops fixed either to the operating-members or to the fixed member of the brake, whereby a more energetic braking action is obtained. As shown in Fig. 1, a band a. is adapted to be expanded into engagement with its brake drum by the action of a cam d on operating- members b pivoted at c and is then carried round by the brake drum until one or other of its ends abuts against one of two stops e carried by the members b. Alternatively, the free ends of the band may be located at the cam end of the brake, and the stops then be mounted on the fixed member thereof. The frictional member may comprise a number of hinged or disconnected rigid shoes. As shown in Fig. 3, the band may be partly rigid and partly flexible, the rigid parts being connected to the members b by links h. The band may comprise two sections connected by a strut arranged above the cam d, or, as shown in Fig. 5, the two sections a may be interdependent, and each section be adapted to engage a stop e on one of the members b or a stop f on the fixed member of the brake according to the direction of rotation of the brake drum. The brake unit may be interchangeable with the brake shoes of the usual type of expanding brake, and the stops may be arranged intermediate the ends of the frictional members. According to the Provisional Specification, rollers or a lubricant may be provided between the operating and frictional members of the brake to reduce friction therebetween; the stops may be so arranged that the forces transmitted to them by the frictional members act in opposition to the forces exerted by the cam; for instance, the stops e may be provided at the cam end of the members b, and levers or links may connect the ends of the band to the cam, or one end of the band may be linked to one member b.
