Abstract

353,206. Brake shoes acting on drums. HANCOCK, G. W., Dayton, Cleveland Avenue, Draycot, near Derby. June 24, 1930, No. 19285. [Class 103 (i).] In a brake of the type comprising two or more main shoes b, b<1> each having a friction lining g and each adapted when the brake is applied to pivot about a fixed point b<2>, b3 at one end so as to engage the interior or exterior of a rotating drum a, in order to prevent squeaking of the brake and uneven wear of the shoes each main shoe carries at its other end an auxiliary shoe h with a friction lining k<3>, one end of this shoe being urged by elastic means away from the main shoe towards the drum, means being provided to limit this movement. Each auxiliary shoe h is pivoted to its main shoe by a pin h<2> passing through ears h<1> and at one end is acted on by strong springs j inserted in pockets in the main shoe, and at the other end by a set-screw k<1> for adjusting for wear. Pivotally hinged to the free end of each main shoe is an internally threaded member c into which is screwed a rod d formed as a cylinder d<2> at one end to fit a corresponding socket in a cam member d<3> so that when the latter is rotated by means of an arm d<4> the main and auxiliary shoes are forced into contact with the drum against the action of pairs of springs e. The springs of each pair are joined together by a rod e<1> at their inner ends and at their outer ends are hinged to the shoes by rods e<2> and pins e<3>, slots f being cut in the shoes into which the ends of the rods e<2> pass.
