Blocks acting on drums; blocks and shoes; compensating for wear. - A vehicle brake comprises three or more shoes d, hinged at one end on pins d<3> passing through the shoes flanges d<1> and flanges b<1> on a fixed drum b, which are adapted to be expanded into engagement with the brake drum, when a rotary member, comprising annular discs c<1>, c<11> is rotated by the brake lever e" and lever e, by means of levers d<5> hinged at one end on the pins d<3> and having trunnions d<55> at their other ends which are mounted between stops c<4> on the rotary member. The discs c<1>, c<11> are held together by pins c<2> which carry rollers c<3> engaging the fixed drum b, and they are located laterally by means of hollow plugs passed through the periphery of the drum b. Through these plugs pass rods d<11> hinged at one end to pins d<12> carried by the shoe flanges, and the rods carry spiral springs d<13> at their inner ends which hold the shoes out of contact with the drum unless they are urged outwardly by the levers d<5> mounted at the free ends of the shoes. Wear of the brake shoes may be compensated for by adjusting these studs. In modifications, the levers d' are pivotally mounted on the free ends of the shoes and bear either on the pivots of the adjacent shoes or on pins carried by the fixed flanges b<1>; or the shoes may be hinged at each end to one arm of a bellcrank 'lever pivoted on a pin carried by the flanges b<1>, the second arm of the lever being engaged between the stops c<4>.
