Blocks acting on drums; force-transmitting mechanism.-In expanding brakes, each end of each shoe engages with a fulcrum pin about which it can rock and is engaged by a balanced applying-device, so that the effort of applying the brakes is lessened, and the reactions on the drum are substantially equalized. As shown in Fig. 1, a pair of shoes A are adapted to be engaged with the drum by a pair of cams F slidable transversely through slots F<3> in spindles D which are simultaneously operated, and the shoes are adapted to pivot on plain portions of the spindles. When the brake is applied, the shoes move until one bears against the upper spindle and one against the lower, whilst the cams slide through their slots to equalize the forces applied to the shoes. Toggle links may replace the cams F, or a pair of cams connected together by equalizing-means may be used at each end. The fulcrum pins for the shoes may be separate from the spindles D and may be arranged either nearer to or more distant from the axis of the drum than the spindles. As shown in Fig. 5, a single shoe composed of a number of links A hinged together may be used. In this case a single cam F and a single fulcrum pin may be provided, but two pins M are shown.
