Abstract

246,826. Rosenberg, R. H. Jan. 27, 1925, [Convention date]. Blocks and shoes acting on drums and on flat sides of discs; blocks and shoes.-In a brake of the kind comprising a pair of shoes adapted to grip a rotatable drum or disc, the shoes are carried bv a member freely movable in a direction at an angle to the surface with which they engage so that the pressure applied to the shoes is equalized and allowance is made for unevenness of the surface. The shoes mav be adjusted to take up wear. The brake shown in Figs. 1 and 3 comprises shoes 11, 12 freely mounted on pins 14, 15 journaled at the end of an arm 20 freely pivoted at 21 on a fixed arm 22. The shoes are held laterally against collars 16 on the pins by springs 19. The parts of the pins which carry the shoes are eccentric with respect to the parts mounted in the arm 20. The pin 14 is normally rigidly held in the split end of the arm 20 but can be turned by the head 24 to adjust the shoes in relation to the drum after slackening nuts 23. The pin 15 is adapted to be turned to engage both shoes with the drum 10 by an arm 26. As the arm 20 is free to swing about the pivot 21, the action of the brake is not interferred with bv any lack of concentricity of the drum. A similar arrangement may be applied to shoes acting on opposite sides of a disc. Two pairs of shoes diametrically arranged and independently operable may be provided. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), the invention may be applied to clutches. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
