Abstract

257,459. Fornaca, G. Nov. 24, 1925. Blocks and shoes acting on drums.-Expanding shoe brakes of the type in which the thrust imparted to one shoe by the rotation of the drum when the brake is applied is transmitted to the other irrespective of the direction of rotation of the drum are operated by a cam engaging a pair of levers mounted on a bridge member and respectively engaging the ends of the shoes. The shoes 1,2 are articulated and supported at their upper ends by means which allow the necessary relative expansion of the shoes and their oscillation as a whole when applied to the drum. The means shown are described in Specification 257,464. Levers 7, 9 pivotally connected by a bridge piece 8 are pivotally engaged with the ends of the shoes and are engaged by the cam 5. Assuming the drum to be rotating in the direction of the arrow and the cam to be turned to ,expand the shoes, the thrust imparted to the shoe 1 by the drum will be transmitted to the shoe 2 which will be thrust hard against a fixed stop 14 as shown in Fig. 2. If the drum is rotating in the other direction, the shoe 1 will receive the thrust of the shoe 2 and will abut against the stop 14.
