Blocks acting on drums.-The pivoted ends of the shoes of expanding and contracting brakes are loosely mounted on a fixed stud so that they may move to a slight extent in relation to the stud to equalise the pressures on the shoes, the latter being, however, free to turn only in relation to each other. In the case of an expanding brake having two shoes B adapted to engage a brake drum A, Fig. 1, the lower ends of the shoes are shaped to engage a bush C which is a loose fit on the stud D. When the two pairs of shoes are employed in place of a single pair of shoes B, the pivot of each pair includes a stud D and bush E. The shoes of a contracting brake may each have an eye engaging a bush E fitting loosely on a stud D, or, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, one shoe J may be provided with an eye K, fitting loosely over a fixed stud L and having a lateral extension P over which an eye M of the shoe H fits closely.
