Abstract
200,742. Shave, G. J., Watson, O. W. J., and London General Omnibus Co., Ltd. Sept. 28, 1922. Blocks acting on drums. - Relates to braking gear of the kind comprising two associated pairs of interengaging friction members, one member of each pair of which is provided with a friction strip or wearing surface and consists in providing that member of each pair which is not provided with the wearing surface and which does not therefore become changed in diameter, of larger diameter than the corresponding member of the other pair whereby when the one member provided with the wearing surface has become worn to be of no further use with its co-operating member transfer can be effected and its wearing surface be made to co-operate with the member of the other pair. When a detachable friction strip is employed, the arrangement, may be such that the one brake may use a thicker strip than the other, so that the thicker strip when worn so as to be no longer of use with the one brake may be transferred to the other. Fig. 1 show two internally expanding shoe brakes comprising drums 11, 12 secured to a vehicle wheel 10. The friction surface of the drum 11 is of less diameter than that of the drum 12. The shoes 13, 14 are of the same size and shape so as to be interchangeable. Thicker friction strips 15 can thus be attached to the shoes 13 than to the shoes 14, and when these strips have been worn, the strips with or without the shoes 13 can be transferred for engagement with the drum 12. A pair of pivoted shoes operated by a cam is shown as applied to each drum; one pair may be operated by hand and the other by a pedal. The friction strips 15, 16 may be secured to the drums 11, 12 instead of to the shoes.
