Blocks and shoes acting on drums.-A floating cam for operating brakes comprises a cam mounted to slide upon a plate forming part of the operating spindle. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the cam a, disposed between the ends of the brake segments s is provided with a slide c mounted in a slideway d in the plate b forming part of the operating spindle B. The cam can thus centre itself between the ends of the segments and apply an equal pressure thereto irrespective of unequal movements of these ends. In a modification the plate b has a transverse pin on which slide ears projecting from the cam. In a further form, Fig. 7, the cam is adapted to slide in any direction transverse to the spindle, and for this purpose an intermediate piece k has two 'slide members l, i disposed at right angles to each other and engaging corresponding slide ways formed in the cam a and plate b respectively. The cam may have an outer flange to give lateral support to the ends of the segments s.
