Abstract

262,186. Welin, A. Sept. 4, 1925. Blocks and shoes acting on drums; actuated or applied by springs. - In a braking system, more particularly for winches, one or more members to be braked are each provided with a plurality of brakes formed with materials having different coefficients of friction and means are provided for successively or simultaneously applying and releasing the brakes. Also the front-wheel brakes of a vehicle may be lined with a material having a coefficient of friction differing from that lining the back-wheel brakes. The shoes 1, 2 pivoted on a pin 3 are applied by a spring 8 surrounding a rod 7 passing through extensions 6, 12 of the shoes and are released by pivoted arms 17, 18 mounted on a rotatable block 16. The arms 17, 18 are adapted to engage in recesses in the extension 6 of the shoe 1 and in a block 11 attached to the rod 7 and bearing on the extension 12 of the shoe 2. The recess in the block 11 is a greater depth so that, on rotation of the block 16, the shoe 1 lined with the material having the higher coefficient of friction is first released. A spring 12a of the Belleville type bears on the extension 12. The braked member has pivoted thereon pawls 20 each having an extension 22 carrying a blade spring 23 which presses upon the adjacent pawl. The extensions 22 tend to prevent, by centrifugal force, disengagement of the pawls.
