Abstract

785,367. Disc brakes. GIRLING, Ltd. Sept. 6, 1955 [Sept. 7, 1954], No. 25887/54. Class 103 (1). In a " spot-type " disc brake, the torque on the backing plates carrying the friction pads is taken by spaced pins mounted in parallel relationship to the axis of the disc in a rigid caliper housing. In the embodiment illustrated, brake discs or rings 16, 17 slidably keyed in an axial direction to the rim of an aircraft wheel 10 are adapted to be frictionally engaged by segmental shaped friction pads 27 and 29 to retard the wheel. A caliper housing 18 carrying the friction pads, backing plates and hydraulic cylinder 22, straddles the brake discs from the inside and is rigidly mounted by bolts 20 to a non-rotatable portion of the axle assembly. When the brake is applied, piston 23 forces the right-hand friction pad 27 carried by backing plate 28 against an adjacent braking disc 17 which moves axially and, through friction pads 29, urges the other brake disc 16 against rigid left-hand end pad 27 so that each brake disc is gripped between two friction pads. The torque on the pads is taken through the backing plates 28, 30 by pins 34 mounted in housing 18. The major part of the torque will be taken by one or other of the pins 34 according to the direction of rotation of the wheel. The torque-taking pins 34 may be inserted after the brake is assembled and are removable to permit the pads and backing plates to be removed from the housing in a radially outward direction when the wheel is removed.
