Abstract

543,905. Vehicle brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and PARNELL, F. G. Nov. 8, 1940, No. 16263. [Class 103 (i)] Relates to vehicle breaking mechanism in which the effort applied by the operation is utilised to apply the kinetic energy of the vehicle itself to operate the brakes. In the example shown in Fig. 2, a main brake comprises a non-rotating, but axially movable member 10 with facings 21 of frictional material gripped between the disc 12 of a casing 11, carried by a vehicle road wheel, and an axially-movable disc 13 rotating with the casing 11, a drum portion 14 integral with the disc 13 forming part of an auxiliary brake with braking shoes 15 applied by the operator to produce axial pressure between the discs 12 and 13 of the main brake by means of a cam device, comprising balls 33 carried in conical pits 32, 31 in the disc 13 and in wedging pieces 28 carried by a flange 18 bolted to the casing 11. In the example shown in Fig. 4 the disc 13, with drum part 14 retarded by means of braking shoes 15, applies axial pressure to a separate intermediate disc 46 splined to the casing 11; in this construction the member 13 is supported by roller bearings 53 on the disc 18 bolted to the casing 11, additional cam action by the main brake, such as occurs in the construction of Fig. 2, being avoided so as to obtain greater stability in operation of the main brake.
