Abstract

677,248. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and BUTLER, H. J. May 24, 1950 [June 24, 1949], No. 16784/49. Class 103 (i). A wheel and disc brake assembly comprises a pair of brake discs rotatable with the wheel, a non-rotatable torque plate extending radially between the discs and having a bifurcated portion at each end, each portion straddling a part of one of the discs, one or more pairs of axially aligned friction pads associated with the bifurcated portions and adapted to frictionally engage the discs, and a fluid-pressure operated mechanism to effect such engagement. As shown applied to an aircraft landing-wheel the torque plate 12 is secured to the stub axle 5 while the discs 9, 10, which are of annular form, engage splines 8 on the wheel rim 1. Each end of the torque plate carries two pairs of circular friction pads 20, 22 and 21, 23 operated by fluidpressure pistons 18, 19, the pads 20, 22 engaging the disc 10, while the pads 21, 23 engage the disc 9 at points diametrically opposite. A scoop 25 is fitted to deflect cooling air into the interior of the brake, from which it is discharged across the surfaces of the discs 9, 10. The discs may be of the type described in Specification 650,499 or 677,233.
