Abstract

706,789. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and BUTLER, H. J. April 17, 1952 [May 16, 1951], No. 11397/51. Class 103(1) A disc type brake comprises a braking member having a pair of co-axial discs spaced axially apart and connected together at one periphery, slots adjacent the periphery to permit the passage of air, means for connecting said member with a rotatable member, a non-rotatable housing located between said discs and occupying a minor portion of their periphery, and pads of friction material axially slidable in said housing to frictionally engage the adjacent sides of said discs by fluid pressure operated means. A pair of co-axial steel discs 1 and 2, shown in Fig. 2, which is a sectional view through A-A of Fig. 1, are spaced axially apart and connected together at their outer peripheries by axially-extending aluminium fins 3. The inner periphery of one of the said discs is provided integrally with a radially extending annular flange 4 which is provided with a plurality of holes 5. whereby the braking member may be secured to a rotatable part of the wheel assembly. The non- rotatable part of the wheel assembly is provided with an annular flange 6 which has secured to it an arcuate housing 7 which has three equispaced bores 9 extending axially through the housing in which six circular friction pads 11, backed by plunger members 10, are provided. When brakes are applied, fluid pressure is forced from a conventional braking system to the space between the plunger members 10 thereby forcing the pads into frictional contact with the inside walls of the revolving braking member. Slots are provided adjacent the periphery to permit the passage of air for cooling purposes and may be positioned as shown in Fig. 2 or provided in the side walls of discs 1 and 2. In another embodiment of the invention the braking member comprises two pairs of co-axial discs connected together by axially extending fins. The bores 9, instead of each being provided, as described, with a pair of oppositely acting plunger members and associated friction pads, may, instead, each be closed at one end and provided with a single friction pad, almost as long as the thickness of the housing, and backed by a plunger member. Preferably there are an 'even number of bores and adjacent friction pads act in opposite directions so that even less frequent renewal is necessary than when two pads are located in the same bore.
