Abstract

651,876. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and BUTLER, H. J. April 7, 1948, No. 9693. [Class 103 (i)] A wheelbrake assembly, particularly for aircraft, comprises a rotatable outer drum 1, a fixed inner drum or hub member 5, and radially aligned spokes 2 having fitted externally thereof metal discs 11 so that there is formed within the wheel a fluid-tight space enclosing a disc brake formed of rotatable and non-rotatable discs 14 and 16 which are compressed by means of a fluid pressure actuated pressure plate 21. To cool the brake a quantity of oil or other liquid is introduced which when the wheel is rotating at a constant speed forms, due to centrifugal action, a ring at the periphery of the enclosed space. When the wheel is braked, due to the inertia effect, the ring of fluid tends to rotate within the wheel and is caused by suitable means to be sprayed over the brake discs to cool them. The means for causing turbulence may comprise slots, with bent over lips, formed in the rotatable discs 14 near their outer periphery, paddleshaped members 25 as shown in Fig. 3, formed on the outer periphery of the non-rotatable discs 16 or any other suitable device. A heat resistant lining 27, such as that described in Specification 550,578, may be fitted externally of the rim 1 to prevent the tyre becoming overheated with consequent ill effects thereto.
