Abstract

751,626. Disc brakes. SOC. D'INVENTIONS AERONAUTIQUES ET MECANIQUES S.I.A.M. Feb. 5, 1954 [June 5, 1953], No. 3464/54. Class 103 (1). In a disc brake for wheels, the friction pads are mounted on axially movable, non- rotatable, annular webs which are imperforate, apart from the holes provided to accommodate guide means. The wheel 1 is mounted for rotation about a fixed axle shaft 2 on bearings 3. Surrounding the hub 4 of the wheel is a sleeve 4 fixed to the axle and formed with flanges 6 and 7; the purpose of the sleeve 5 being to shield the bearings 3 against the heat generated by the braking action, substantially as described in Specification 686,582. A pair of axially movable brake discs 8, 8a are loosely mounted on the sleeve 5 and fastened to the wheel rim by means of bolts 9. Secured to the flange 6 is a web 10 carrying a pair of friction pads 11 which are arranged diametrically opposite each other. Arranged between the pair of rotatable discs 8, 8a is a web 12 which carries on each side a pair of diametrically opposed friction pads 13. Opposite the other side of disc 8a is similarly mounted a web 14 which is provided on its inside with a pair of diametrically opposed friction pads 15. The webs 12 and 14 are formed with notches or holes 16 and 17 respectively through which project guide bolts 18 fixed relative to the axle shaft 2 to enable the webs 12 and 14 to move axially. Keyed on shaft 2 and pressed against the flange 7 is a bridge 19 either end of which carries a piston and cylinder actuating device 20 to move the web 14 to the right when the brake is applied. As shown in Fig. 3 the friction pads 13 are carried by an annular web 12, the annular webs absorbing and dissipating much of the heat generated on braking. Where considerable amounts of heat are to be dealt with, the webs may be provided with peripheral ribs projecting to either side thereof to prevent warping. The web 12 may be goffered or corrugated, or formed with radial or concentric ribs, or with blades.
