Abstract

654,723. Aeroplane wheels. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and BUTLER, H. J. Aug. 13, 1948, No. 21368. [Classes 144 (i) and 144 (ii)] An aeroplane wheel of large braking capacity comprises a radial annular web 6 the inner peripheral portion of which is secured to a twopart annular hub 7 so that the parts extend on opposite sides thereof, and the outer peripheral portion of which is secured to a tyre-seating rim 1 in the median plane thereof. As shown, the rim 1, which has fixed tyre-retaining portions 3, and the hub 7 are flanged and circumferentially split in a central plane, each portion having a part of the respective flanges, and the respective flange parts being bolted on opposite faces of the annular web 6. The wheel carries two flanged brake drums 12 which are secured one on each side of the web 6 with their flanges 11 resting on web shoulders 10. The hub 7 may be stiffened by axially extending ribs 14. In an alternative construction, the split rim may be replaced by a one-piece rim having a removable tyre-retaining portion on one side, and a single web-securing flange adjacent the central plane. The drum brakes may be replaced by disc-type brakes, the discs being housed between the rim and the hub.
