Abstract
723,975. Spring wheels. MANTZEL, A. W. Sept. 18, 1951 [Oct. 2, 1950; April 5, 1951], No. 21889/51. Class 144 (1) A spring wheel has a rim 3 resiliently supported for relative radial displacement with respect to a hub 4 by means of two rubber rings 1 of greater axial width than radial thickness, the axially inner and outer edges of which are bonded to inner and outer annular discs 5, 2 respectively detachably secured to the rim 3 and hub 4. As shown, the rubber rings 1 may be vulcanized to the 'rim parts 3 which are bolted to peripherally meeting portions of the discs 5, the latter being obliquely cranked axially outwardly to bring their radially inner peripheries, which are provided with self-lubricating slide rings 6, adjacent the outer or guide discs 2. Fig. 3 shows an arrangement wherein the rubber rings 1 are each vulcanized at their side edges, which are thickened to provide greater area of adhesion, to separate annual rings 17, 15, which are releasably secured to the rim-supporting discs 5 and guide discs 2 respectively in such a manner that the rubber rings 1 slope radially outwardly towards the rim 3.- The annular guide discs 2 may have' interengaging toothed inner peripheral flanges 10 forming a double conical hub for clamping on a wheel axle 11, the inboard disc 2 carrying a brake drum 13. The supporting discs 5 may have their inner peripheries formed by an inverted channel section ring 19 housing a rubber buffer ring 20, the slide blocks 6 being supported on the axial flanges of the channel 19 in recesses in the discs 5. In an alternative construction the discs 5 may themselves be shaped to form together a hollow inner peripheral bead, the radially inner surface of which houses the buffer ring. In a further construction the annular rings 15 may be attached to a single radially extending rigid hub disc 2 on opposite sides of which the rim-supporting members bear via slide blocks and packing rings, the supporting members forming a sealed hollow annular space in which the disc 2 slides. The sealed space may be oil filled for damping purposes. Where high static loads are to be supported, spring-loaded balls engaged in recesses in the discs 2 may be provided between the annular discs 2 and 5.
