Abstract

819,584. Spring wheels. MATTERN, J. March 21, 1956 [March 23, 1955], No. 8769/56. Class 144 (1). A spring wheel comprises a hub 2 connected to a rim 9 by two annular cup-shaped rubber or like bodies 7 which are forced axially towards each other at their inner peripheries on the hub 2, so that their mutually facing outer peripheries are distorted to press radially outwardly on, and support the rim 9. As shown in Fig. 2, the outer peripheries of the bodies 7 are clamped against opposite sides of a rim-supporting annular plate 8 by a radially inwardly opening channel-section ring 12 carried by the plate 8. The hub 2 is connected to a brake drum 1 and carries two flanged sleeves 6, 6<SP>1</SP> which are spaced by a sleeve 5 and receive the inner peripheries of the rubber bodies 7 which are forced axially towards each other thereon by an end ring 10 secured by bolts 11, passing through holes in the bodies 7 and the brake drum 1. To prevent relative rotation between the rim 9 and the bodies 7, the ring 12, into which the outer peripheries of the bodies 7 are pressed, may be internally toothed or corrugated to provide driving projections. In an alternative arrange. ment the ring 12 is in two parts bolted to opposite faces of the plate 8. Fig. 6 shows an arrangement for a disc wheel 13 wherein the rubber bodies 28 are of larger diameter and have their inner peripheries clamped in spaced annular channels formed by angle-section rings 15, 20, spaced by a channel-section ring 22, secured to a two-part periphery 14, 19 of the wheel disc 13. The outer peripheries of the rubber bodies 28 are clamped against a radial perforated rimsupporting ring 26 within a channel ring 25, which may be internally toothed. The rings 15, 20 may be notched to provide driving engagement with the bodies 28. The rubber bodies 7, 28 may be reinforced and may be thickened at their inner peripheries.
