A rail vehicle wheel assembly comprises two spaced discs 5, 6 each with an outer tyre-supporting rim portion 7, 8 respectively, and an inner hub-engaging portion 13, 14 secured to a divided hub 16, 15 mounted on a hollow axle assembly 1, 2, the discs being convexly curved and merging smoothly, without change of direction of curvature, with the rim and hubengaging portions in a manner to increase the resilience of the wheel provided by its curvature. As shown, the discs 5, 6 have radially inwardly projecting peripheral flanges 9, 9<SP>1</SP> which are welded together, the outboard disc 5 having also an inclined rim portion 7 to provide axial support for a tyre 11 welded thereon. The hub-engaging portions 13, 14 of the discs are welded respectively to radially outer and inner interfitting sleeves 16, 15 forming the divided hub. The sleeves are a sliding fit, which becomes a gripping fit when assembled on the hollow axle, and may be welded at adjacent ends 17, Fig. 1, or may interfit as shown in Fig. 2. The radially inner sleeve of Fig. 1 may have a radially inwardly directed flange on its outboard end to abut the end of the tube 1 of the hollow axle. In each case the inboard end 18 of the inner sleeve 15 is bevelled to graduate the load distribution to the axle tube 1. The hollow axle comprises a thin-walled tube 1 with a hollow axle end 2 received and welded in each end, each axle end 2 having a conical or like bore in that portion within the tube 1 to provide for even pressure distribution. To re-tyre the wheel, Fig. 5, the worn tyre is machined to provide a stepped, relatively thin shell 25 and the replacement tyre 27 is located thereon by an internal radial flange 26 and retained by a spring ring 28.
