Abstract

722,732. Vehicle wheels. PHILLIPS & CO., Ltd., J. A. March 17, 1953 [March 22, 1952]. No. 7459/52. Class 144 (1). [Also in Group XXII]. A cycle wheel hub is formed from two tubular medial parts 10 and two tubular end parts 11 each having a radially outwardly directed flange 13 or 19 respectively at one end, the parts being first assembled in co-axial pairs to provide two half shells each comprising an end part 11 and a medial part 10 the flanges 19, 13 of which are projection welded together, and the two half shells then being welded together with the barrel portions 12 of the medial parts 10 aligned and abutting to provide a hub shell having a central barrel 12 with a radial flange 23, Fig. 2, at each end and a tubular portion 18 projecting axially outwardly from each flange. As shown the tubular portions 12 of the medial parts have chamfered ends 24 to facilitate welding and the flanges 13 are each formed with a projecting central boss 15 which seats into a central recess 21 in the flange 19 of the adjacent end part. The abutting face 20 of each flange 19 is formed with annular projections 22 near its inner and outer peripheries for use in projection welding of the flanges 13, 19 to form the flanges 23 of the assembled hub shell. Alternatively the projections 22 may be formed on the flanges 13 or on both the flanges 13 and 19. The flanges 23 of the assembled hub shell are pierced to provide spoke holes 27 and bearing cups 26 are forced into the tubular ends 18. One end portion 18 is externally screw-threaded, 28, for all or part of its length and a spacer ring 29 may be passed thereover to abut the flange 23. In an alternative arrangement the barrel portion 12 of each medial part may be flared outwardly to provide a conical bearing housing where it joins its flange 13.
