Abstract

666,112. Vehicle wheels. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. Oct. 26, 1949 [Dec. 22, 1948], No. 27481/49. Class 144 (ii). To vary the track width of a vehicle, a wheel comprises a dished reversible disc 11 having an apertured hub mounting portion 13 axially offset from a peripheral rim mounting portion 14, and a rim 12 having secured to its underside the bases 23 of a plurality of circumferentially-spaced, radially aligned channelshaped members 19 which are axially offset from the central radial plane of the rim and have means (20, 21) for selective attachment, to the wheel disc. As shown, the members 19 each have two apertured radially inwardly projecting lugs 20, 21 and are riveted to the rim base so that the lugs are offset by different amounts on either side of the central radial plane of the rim 12. For each of the two positions of the wheel disc 11 on an axle hub 10, the rim 12 has four possible positions relative to the centre line of the vehicle, viz: the inboard or outboard surface of the periphery 14 secured to the outer surface of either lug 20 or lug 21. A further eight positions of the rim 12 are made possible by the provision of one or more apertures (not shown) in the disc periphery 14 through which the lugs 20 or 21 may pass to allow the inner surfaces thereof to abut the periphery 14. Specification 534,355 is referred to.
