Abstract

966,566. Railway wheels. T. WATT. May 8, 1961 [May 8, 1960 ; July 27, 1960], No. 16707/61. Headings B7C and B7L. A railway wheel comprises separate cast rim and hub portions 3, 2, bolted together by circumferentially spaced transverse bolts 9 passing through lapped co-extensive radial flanges 8, 4 of the rim and hub portions, the circular edge surfaces 24, 23 of the flanges 8, 4 locating with circumferential surfaces of the hub and rim respectively. The rim may be attached to either side of the hub flange 4, and the hub may have an axial extension 14 at one end to receive the inner race of an inboard or outboard bearing 16. Alternatively, the bearings 16 may be mounted directly on the axle 1 on which the hub is press fitted. The rim may be shaped as shown in Fig. 3, and to obviate machining, a Z-section annular packing strip 20 of ductile material may be inserted between the two parts as shown in Fig. 4. Additionally, spacing washers 25 may be provided between the flanges 8, 4 for axial adjustment of the rim relative to the hub. The hub 2 may be axially located on the axle 1 by a circlip 27 as shown in Fig. 7. Fig. 6 shows a hub extended at each end to provide integral stub axles 1a for mounting in a bogie frame. A brake drum 30 being secured to the hub flange opposite the rim by the same securing bolts 9.
