Abstract

650,976. Drum brake. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and BUTLER, H. J. March 6, 1948, Nos. 6970 and 29872. [Class 103 (i)] A drum brake, particularly for light aircraft, autogiros and the like, comprises a pair of equal diameter coaxial drums 6 and 7, Fig. 1, which are mounted to rotate with the wheel hub 1 and are gripped by inner and outer brake blocks 16 and 17 interconnected by the rod 24 of a fluidpressure actuated piston 23, movable in a cylinder 21 secured to a spider member 12, 13 bolted to the fixed axle 3. As shown in Fig. 2, the spider member has radial slots 15 in its outer periphery which serve to guide the movement of the blocks 16, 17. The rod 24, which passes between the drums 16, 17 has secured to its end a spherical face nut 26 which in combination with the spherical bearing surface 20 of the cylinder 21 allows the blocks 16, 17 to rock sufficiently to adjust themselves to irregularities in the drum surface. In a modification, there is only a single brake drum and the force from the internallymounted fluid-pressure actuator is transmitted to the outer brake shoe by means of a U- shaped member extending around the rim of the drum. The actuator may be such as that described in Specifications 631,880 and 641,665.
