Abstract

715,378. Vehicle tyres. WESTLAND GUMMIWERKE GES. Dec. 19, 1952 (Dec. 27, 1951], No. 32235/52. Class 144(2) To prevent flattening under heavy loads a solid rubber tyre 1 for commercial vehicles is compressed between the two portions 2 of a divided rigid rim to leave only the tread region of the tyre projecting beyond the rim, such projection being insufficient to allow lateral spreading of the tread under load. As shown the tyre is compressed between two halves of a wheel disc by transverse bolts 3, axially inwardly directed flanges 4 on the periphery of the rim portions 2 of the disc-halves engaging in grooves in the tyre to exert radial compression of the tyre. In an alternative arrangement radial precompression is obtained by a rim of frusto-conical section having radially outwardly converging sides.
