Abstract
542,762. Disc brakes. BUDD WHEEL CO. Feb. 20, 1940, Nos. 3226/40 [Convention date, March 17, 1939], 3227/40 and 3228/40 [Convention dates, May 31, 1939]. Addition to 520,928. [Class 103 (i)] Modified annular brake discs of the kind described in the parent Specification comprise in one form Figs. 2, 3 a flange 7 adapted to be bolted through holes 31 to a vehicle wheel hub or axle and on which is cast the disc proper comprising a pair of rings 19, 20 connected by radial braces 21. A series of relatively thin radial vanes 25 disposed between successive braces extends inwardly from each ring towards the other and are of tapering width radially inwards as shown by the inner edges 28 thereof so that the total unobstructed cross-sectional area for the outward radial flow of air effected by the braces is substantially constant. Air passing through radial slots 18 in the flange 7 passes over the braking surface 10 which is relatively close to the wheel to effectively cool that surface. Heat is also conducted from the brake surfaces 10, 11 by the vanes and braces. The flange is corrugated as at 16 to give flexibility and it has dovetail notches in its edge for anchoring it to the ring 19. In another construction, the braces 108, Fig. 7 which as in Figs. 2, 3 are of the same radial depth as the vanes 109, are of X-form providing passages 110 therein. In this form, the flange corresponding to the flange 7, the rings 104, 105. and the vanes and braces 108, 109 form a single casting. In a further form, an intermediate ring 209, Figs. 11, 12, 14 is integral with thick radial braces 208 and thinner races 210. A space 212 may be formed in the vanes to facilitate the flow of air. An additional support which may be provided for the disc comprises an annular web 214 with radial projections 217 engaging the ring 206, and an outer ring 219 engaging the outer brake ring 207 and connected to the web and projections by radial webs 218. These webs are in alignment with the braces 208. This support is secured to the wheel to be braked by the same bolts 212 that secure the flange 201 of the brake disc.
