Energy-absorbing elements. - In wheels in which air is drawn through apertures in the web to cool the braking surface by the rotation of the wheel, air passages 34 are provided in the head 24 with openings 36 adjacent the centre of the brake drum, the passages discharging across the braking flange 26 by openings 38. The wheel rim 42 is carried on a disc 40 welded or otherwise connected to a ring 46 which bears on annular shoulders 44, 48 on the brake drum. The ring 46 is tensioned by screws 52 threaded into hardened bushings 54 cast into enlargements in the flange 50 of the brake drum. The passages 34 are formed in ribs cast on the inside or outside of the head 24. In a modified construction the head is formed with inner and outer walls joined at intervals by webs, thus defining these passages. In this case the air circulates over the outside of the brake drum between radially-extending spokes projecting beyond the drum, and the rim and disc are a one-piece duralumin casting formed with annular wedge surfaces engaging corresponding surfaces on the outer edges of the spokes and on the outer wall of the head. In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the hub 70 co-operates with a clamping-part 72 to embrace the double walls of the head. the whole being held together by bolts 78. Outlet openings 82 and a flange 84 for keeping oil away from the brake linings may be provided. A drop-centre run 90 is attached to an annular channel stamping 86 bearing on offset portions 85, 87 of the outer wall 76 of the head, the offset portion 87 directing air over the braking flange 26. In a further modification the intake openings are in the form of notches in the inner edge of the outer wall of the head. Annular shoulders are formed on this outer wall adapted to engage corresponding surfaces on a cast duralumin rim with a drop centre and on an inwardly extending flange of the rim. The hub, Fig. 1, is provided with shoulders 14, 16 for the wheel bearings 18, 20.
