Abstract

938,291. Disc brakes. CRANES (DEREHAM) Ltd. Feb. 19, 1960, No. 6026/60. Class 103 (1). A disc brake is provided with operating means situated at a position remote from the disc to avoid the effects of heat generated on braking, the operating means comprising an inner shaft 15 passing through the disc to which a pressure plate 14 and friction pad 12 are fixed and an outer hollow shaft 17 surrounding the inner shaft 15 on which the other pressure plate 16 and friction pad 13 is affixed; a lever 21 movable in a plane parallel to the disc rotates the hollow shaft 17 relatively to the inner shaft 15 and by means of screwed connection 19, 20 to convert this rotary movement into relative axial movement of the shaft. The pads are of arcuate form and are arranged as shown in Fig. 2 in relation to the shaft 15. The brake disc is mounted on dowels 8 provided on a spider 3 attached to the hub 4 of vehicle wheel 2 and a clearance 10 is provided between the opposing spaces of the spider and of the rim of the disc to permit limited amount of relative axial movement therebetween to enable adjustment of the wheel hub bearings 11 to effected without applying pressure to the friction pads 12, 13 and without affecting the adjustment of the braking surfaces.
