Abstract

754,529. Disc brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Dec. 20, 1954 [Jan. 13, 1954], No. 36771/54. Class 103 (1). In a disc brake of the type in which the brake actuation is initiated by a circumferential movement of the pressure plate 36 so that the frictional torque on the plate caused through the actuation of a plurality of camming devices 32, a self-energizing axial movement of the plate 36 tending to apply the brake more strongly, the applying means, such as a fluid-pressure cylinder 40, is disposed so as to provide a composite axial and circumferential movement of the pressure plate. As shown in Fig. 3, this action is obtained by arranging the cylinder 40 at an angle to the disc. As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the rotatable disc 24 has circumferentially spaced friction pads 26, cooling air being driven centrifugally through the space therebetween. Fig. 7 shows a mechanical actuatorfor a hand brake also giving a composite axial and circumferential movement to the pressure-plate. In Fig. 8, an actuator adapted for operation by either mechanical or fluid pressure means applies a thrust to the pressure plate 36b through a hardened insert 90 mounted on anti-friction bearings 92, the contact point 95 between the plate 36b and insert 90 being offset from the axis of rotation of the insert.
