Abstract

1317744 Disc brakes; fluid pressure actuators GIRLING Ltd 2 July 1971 [4 July 1970] 32529/70 Headings F2E and F2F A disc brake comprises a stationary housing 10 having a radial braking surface 9, a rotatable friction disc mounted on a shaft 6 and a hydraulie actuator for forcing the disc into contact with the surface 9, the actuator having a pair of co-operating annular piston and cylinder members with a sliding seal 16 or 52 therebetween, one member comprising a metal shell such as shell 14 of channel section held against rotation with respect to the housing and the other member being in the form of an annular piston such as piston 15 axially movable to apply pressure to the disc and being keyed to the shell so that torque taken by the movable member is transmitted through the shell to the housing. As shown in Fig. 1 two discs 3, 4 are provided one either side of a static annulus 8. Fluid under pressure is brought into the cylinder at one or more points by a sleeve 24 having a socket 25 to receive a pipe from a master cylinder or other source of pressure fluid. Fig. 4 shows an arrangement having a single rotating disc 45 carrying a friction lining on each face. Fig. 5 shows a stationary piston 55 over which works a cylinder 58.
