Abstract

938,950. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. Nov. 16, 1959 [Aug. 16, 1958], No. 26418/58. Class 103 (1). A disc brake has relatively rotatable annular friction surfaces 16, 17, 18, 19 moved into engagement by an axially movable annular pressure plate 21 which has a limited angular movement, a radially movable member 34 moving camming means 27, 31 to initiate an axial force on a portion of plate 21, the resulting angular movement of the plate being converted into an axial force by further camming means 24, 25. A disc 19, Fig. 1, keyed to a fixed housing 10, is interposed between discs 15, 16 splined to an axle 12. The plate 21 has recesses 22 aligned with recesses 23 in an arcuate member 24, the recesses containing balls 25. The plate 21 and wedge member 27 have co-operating recesses 33, 32 containing balls 31, the wedge member 27 being guided between lugs 28 on an end wall of housing 10, Fig. 3, a bell-crank lever 36 pivoted to housing 10 being connected to member 27 by a rod 34. On braking, the rod 34 and member 27 are moved radially outwardly of the housing 10 causing balls 31 to move plate 21 axially against disc 16; the plate 21 then rotates with disc 16 causing balls 25 to ride up the sides of recesses 22, 23 to further move plate 21 and apply the brake. On brake release, member 27 is moved inwardly and springs 37 withdraw plate 21 from disc 16. In Figs. 4-6, not shown, the wedge-member is moved inwardly of the housing to initiate braking, and anti-friction rollers are mounted between the member and the housing end wall.
