Abstract

1499995 Brake wear-adjusting; full-face disc brakes GIRLING Ltd 23 Oct 1975 [18 Nov 1974] 49729/74 Heading F2E In a self-energizing disc brake of the kind in which two pressure plates 10, 11 having inclined recesses 16 with balls 15 between them are moved angularly in opposite directions to bring rotatable friction discs 3, 4, with linings 6 into engagement with opposed radial surfaces 8, 13 in a housing 1, the radial surfaces 8, 13 are relatively movable axially, and adjusting means 14 are provided for adjusting the axial spacing between them to compensate for wear of the friction linings 6. As shown, the left-hand radial surface is the right-hand face of an adjuster plate 13, Fig. 2, which together with further balls 15 and another adjuster plate 12 forms an adjuster unit 14 nearly identical with the expander unit 121. Plates 12 and 13 have radial ears 31, 32, respectively, Fig. 1, engaged by screws 29, 30, respectively, threaded into housing 1 by amounts sufficient to ensure that the positions of plates 12, 13 eliminate all axial tolerances in the brake. A further rotatable friction disc 2 is provided between adjuster plate 12 and a radial surface 7 on an end wall of housing 1. In operation, after pressure plate 11, friction disc 4 and radial surface 8 have been brought into contact, and pressure plate 10 and friction disc 3 have been brought into contact, further servo action between pressure plates 10, 11 causes friction disc 3 to move adjuster plates 12, 13 bodily to force disc 2 against radial surface 7 of housing 1. Screws 29, 30 may be omitted, and ears 31, 32 coupled by, e.g., a turnbuckle.
