Abstract

1,093,615. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Aug. 24, 1964 [Aug. 31, 1963; March 17, 1964], Nos. 34455/64 and 11131/64. Heading F2E. In a disc brake comprising a rotatable disc 1 and a non-rotatable caliper-type housing 2 which has a pair of limbs 3 and 4 straddling a portion of the outer periphery of the brake disc and a bridging portion 5 extending axially adjacent the outer periphery of the disc, a pair of friction elements 14, 15 is associated with the housing one on each side of the disc at least one of the friction elements comprising a backing plate 19 having a pair of ears 17, 18 which engage one on each side of the bridging portion of the housing to form part of means for retaining the latter friction element against movement relative to the housing in a circumferential direction. As shown in Fig. 2 the friction element 14 associated with the limb 3 of the caliper housing 2 is also provided with a backing plate 23 having ears 24, 25 at its radially outer end to engage one on each side of the bridging portion 5 of the housing. In operation, when the brake applying mechanism 16 is actuated the friction element 15 associated with the limb 4 of the caliper 2 is forced into frictional engagement with the brake disc the reaction on the caliper 2 thereby forcing the friction element 14 associated with the limb 3 of the caliper against the opposite surface of the brake disc. The caliper housing is mounted on a pin 6 which is slidable in bearings 7, 8 to permit the housing to move axially. The backing plate 19 of the friction element 15 is provided with bifurcations 20, 21 (Fig. 3) extending one on each side of the pin and a pin 22 is secured across the bifurcations to prevent radially inward movement of the backing plate 19 and consequent disengagement of the ears 17, 18 from the bridging portion 5 of the caliper 2. Rotational movement of the caliper housing about the axis of the pin 6 is prevented by the engagement of feet 10, 11 formed on the housing with shoulders 12, 13 formed respectively on the non-rotatable component of the brake.
