Abstract
917,459. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. April 19, 1960 [Jan. 17, 1959], No. 1810/59. Class 103 (1). A disc brake comprises a housing 13, 14, 15 containing a rotatable disc 10, Figs. 1, 2, adapted to be gripped between the housing and an axially movable plate 24, and cam means between the plate 24 and the housing to move the plate axially when the housing and plate are urged angularly in opposite directions, the housing having a limited angular movement. Balls 25 are contained in conical recesses in the housing and plate 24 which is biased by springs 26 away from disc 10. Toggle links 27, 28 are connected to lugs 29, 31 on the housing 13, 14, 15 and plate 24 respectively and are drawn together by pull in a rod 36 to rotate the housing and plate in opposite directions, the ball 25 moving plate 24 axially to engage and move disc 10 and apply the brake. The housing and plate then rotate with disc 10 until lug 29 or 31 engages a fixed abutment 37 or 38, resulting in further relative rotation of the housing and plate for stronger braking, the housing rotating on a fixed sleeve 17. In Figs. 3-5 (not shown), the links 27, 28 are replaced by two bell-crank levers engaging one with an abutment on the housing and the other with a tappet extending through the housing and into a tangential slot in the pressure plate; a screw-threaded stud in said other lever engages the tappet to permit adjustment for wear. In Fig. 7, the sleeve on which the housing rotates, has three splines 76, the housing. 67 and plate 71 having lugs 78, 77, respectively, extending into the gaps between splines 76 so that on rotation of housing 67 and plate 71 with the disc either lugs 78 or 77 engage the splines 76 to stop such rotation. The brake disc may be fixed axially with the housing mounted for limited axial movement. The rings or pads 12 of friction material may be secured to the disc 10 or to the plate 24 and the housing.
