954,421. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. April 22, 1960 [April 22, 1959], No. 13656/59. Heading F2E. A vehicle disc brake has a sleeve 55 fixed to a non-rotatable axle casing 56 having an extension 62 forming a calliper 67 over a disc 51 fixed to a rotatable sleeve 53, pads 71 being applied to the disc by fluid pressure actuators 68, 69 formed in the calliper limbs ; the sleeve 53 and disc 51 rotate on bearing 54 and are driven at a higher angular speed than wheel 66, 67 by gearing 64, 63, 58, 57 and shaft 59. The sleeve 53 carries vanes 72 to draw in cool air which is forced to flow over the disc by a deflector 73 on flange 62. According to the Provisional Specification the disc, in the form of a ring, rotates with a wheel and the friction pads are carried by a calliper which is rotated at a higher speed than, and in the opposite direction to, the disc.
