796,841. Disc brakes. SCHIESS AKT.-GES. July 13, 1956 [July 15, 1955], No. 21665/56. Class 103 (1). In a braking device for use in connection with machine tools, the shaft 3 is rotatable with the part to be braked, for example the face-plate of a lathe, and a plurality of brake discs 14 and rotatably driven by outer disc carrier 6 secured to flanged sleeve 5 keyed to the rotatable brake shaft 3. Discs 14 are pressed by spring means 15 against a plurality of discs 14<SP>1</SP> rotatable with inner disc carrier about shaft 9, which is fixedly connected to brake shaft 3, without causing any braking effect on the shaft 3 when an electromagnetic disc brake 21 is not energized. The electromagnetic disc brake 21 comprises a disc rotatable with sleeve 25 keyed to inner disc carrier 8 of the mechanical disc brake. The brake torque of the electromagnetic brake is about 20 per cent greater than the brake torque of the mechanical or spring-loaded brake. In operation, when the outer disc carrier 21 of the electromagnetic brake is energized, the connecting sleeve 25 prevents the discs of the carrier 8 from further rotation. A braking action is thus exerted on the discs of the carrier 6, since the two sets of discs are pressed together by the springs, thereby braking the shaft 3 to which the carrier 6 is fixed.
