Abstract

679,667. Wheel brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. March 2, 1950 [March 3, 1949], No. 5335/50. Class 103 (i). A wheel and brake assembly, particularly for an aircraft landing wheel, comprises a pair of side plates 24, 26 mounted on a non-rotatable axle 22 by bearings 18, 20, the hub 62 serving as a spacer for such bearings and carrying axially movable non-rotatable brake discs 92, 94, 104, 106, the brake being operated by a hydraulic actuator, comprising annular pistons 88, 90 also carried by the hub 62 to engage axiallymovable rotatable brake discs 48, 50, 52, 54 connected to at least one of the side-plates 24, 26. As shown, the wheel is in two portions connected by bolts 38 passing through sleeves 40 which engage the rotary discs 48, 50, 52, 54, the latter being in the form of segments connected by links 53. The friction lining elements 109 are carried by the non-rotary discs 92, 94, 104, 106, which are secured to the hub 62 by bolts 100, 112. Liquid for operating the brake-applying pistons 88, 90 is supplied through a conduit 68 in the axle 22. Air for cooling the brake elements circulates through openings 30, 32 in the side plates 24, 26. A second embodiment, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), is also described in which the width of the wheel is small compared with its diameter, the brake consisting of a single rotary disc located between two fixed discs, operated by a single actuator piston.
