667,280. Brake cooling systems. INDIARUBBER, GUTTA PERCHA & TELEGRAPH WORKS CO., Ltd., TARRIS, F. J., and WEBB, D. Jan. 5, 1950 [Jan. 14, 1946], No. 1156/49. Class 103 (i) A wheel, particularly for aircraft, which is of closed hollow construction so as to contain cooling liquid, has means therein to circulate the liquid, by a path that has both radially and axially directed parts, so as to flow over the interior surface 24 of a wall portion, the external surface 12 of which provides a friction surface for ex. panding brake shoes When the wheel is rotating at high speed the cooling liquid, as shown, is carried round by spaced vanes 32 and forms an annular layer at the radially outer part of the space within the drum. There is a sufficient quantity of liquid for the inner surface thereof to be formed substantially inwardly of the inner edge 34 of the vanes 32 so that, due to the difference in pressure created when the wheel is accelerated or decelerated, a flow of liquid is caused around the annular partition member 16, as indicated by the arrows, which cools the inner surface of the brake drum part 12.
