Abstract
638,573. Cooling brakes. INDIA RUBBER, GUTTA PERCHA, & TELEGRAPH WORKS CO., Ltd., TARRIS, F. J., and WEBB, D. July 31, 1947, No. 20883. [Class 103 (i)] A brake element, which as shown is a disc, but may be in the form of a drum or shoe, comprises a container of high strength material such as steel or steel alloy having friction surfaces 8, 9 closed by rings 6 and 7 and within the container a high heat absorbing metal such as aluminium or sodium. The heat absorbing metal used may be such that its melting point is within the limits of temperature reached during braking, and if aluminium is used, it may be centrifugally cast by filling when molten and rotating the container during cooling to leave a space 16, that allows for expansion during normal braking. The disc is shown used in a brake of the kind described in Specification 638,561.
