Abstract
A friction material for brake linings is formed by a sintered mixture of mullite (3 Al2O3. 2SIO2) and a metallic binder in which said mixture includes a component, particularly molybdenum or tungsten, which acts to inhibit the formation on the friction surface of a high melting point glaze which by causing an excessive rate of torque increase as static friction conditions are approached produces brake chatter. The molybdenum or tungsten have anti-oxidant properties which prevent the existence of iron in its highest valence form thereby maintaining a lower melting point "glaze" a 12,5 per cent maximum proportion by weight of molybdenum being suggested. The proportion of ceramic material, predominantly mullite, may be about 43 per cent, the remaining 35-65 per cent being selected from the metals copper, nickel, titanium, zinc or tin of which copper may form up to about 84 per cent, forming a matrix in which mullite particles are embedded. A second ceramic such as silica may be added, and also a lubricant formed by graphite, hardcoal or lead. An apparatus for testing specimens of the friction material when raised to an appropriate temperature is described. Specification 740,820 is referred to.
