In a disc brake of the kind having an axially slidable disc 4 located between a fixed pad 2 and a movable pad 3, the fixed pad 2 is of a material which has a higher degree of thermal conductivity and is more resistant to wear than the material used for the movable pad 3. It is also of greater area and is preferably secured to the fixed easing of a drive or transmission unit to further facilitate heat dissipation. It may alternatively be secured to a carrier forming part of a brake casing. The movable pad 3 is applied by a mechanical or hydraulic actuator.
