Abstract

912,032. Cooling dynamo-electric machines. HEENAN & FROUDE L t d. July 20, 1961 [Aug. 5, 1960], No. 26247/61. Class 35. In a combined motor driving unit 14 and eddy current apparatus 13 forming a brake or clutch of the type employing a stationary field 46 and two rotors, one. rotor 35 being mounted on the outer 17 of two concentric shafts and the second rotor 34 being mounted on the inner 16 of the two shafts, cooling fluid is drawn through an outer finned cooling chamber 82 of the motor unit by impeller blades 61 mounted on the outer rotor 35 of the eddy current apparatus and rotating in a chamber 32 which is both a cooling chamber for the eddy current apparatus and an impeller chamber. The fluid is exhausted from the impeller chamber via louvred apertures 67a without passing through the main chamber 12 of the motor unit and eddy current apparatus. The cooling chamber 82 comprises an outer shroud 28 resting on fins 75 formed on the wall 18 of the main chamber, which also has fins 74 formed on its inner surface. A further shroud 81 forms a cooling chamber for the cover section 20, resting on fins 76 formed thereon. Cooling of the main chamber 12 is assisted by impeller blades 56 formed in the outer rotor 35. The Specification also describes (Figs. 6, 7, not shown), a modification of the invention for use with liquid cooling.
