Abstract

768,493. Cooling brake drums. SMITH, D. May 9, 1955 [April 6, 1955], No. 10016/55. Class 103 (1). In a brake drum for use with brake shoes adapted to bear on the outer and inner periphery, e and d respectively, of the rim of the drum, air circulating passages a are provided transversely through the rim of the drum between the inner and outer periphery at intervals around the rim. An annular groove c is formed in the rim and the openings into the air passages are adjacent the inner periphery of the rim so as the drum rotates, air is circulated through passages a by centrifugal action to cool both the working surfaces on the brake drum. The brake drum may be shrouded, from a back plate to stepped flange g with a suitable air intake, thereby protecting the inner and outer working surfaces of the rim fromwater and mud.
