Abstract

896,553. Cooling brake drums. KELSEYHAYES CO. Feb. 24, 1959 [April 7, 1958], No. 6354/59. Class 103 (1). In a wheel and brake drum assembly a wheel body 2 and a tyre-carrying rim 3 is provided with a composite brake drum which includes an annular flange 20, provided with an annular cast-iron braking surface 25, radially inside the rim 3 in spaced relation thereto, the flange 20 having an annular extension 26 extending axially beyond the rim 3 to provide an air scoop for flow of air into the space between the rim 3 and the flange 20 while the wheel is rotating and angularly-spaced baffle means 28 are provided on the extension inclined with respect to the direction of rotation of the wheel for increasing the flow of air and producing turbulence. The baffle means 28 comprise an annular series of integral louvers on the radially outer side of the extension 26 and inwardly of its peripheral edge. In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, all of the louvers on the extension open circumferentially of the wheel in the direction of rotation 30 thereof. Other embodiments showing different arrangements of louvers are disclosed in the Specification (e.g. as shown in Figs. 3 and 7).
