Abstract

665,273. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and BUTLER, H. J. Nov. 5, 1949 [Nov. 16, 1948], No. 29689/48. Class 103 (i). A disc brake, which as shown is of the type in which inner and outer coaxial discs 1 and 4, rotatable with, but axially movable relative to a wheel rim 2, are engaged by friction pads 23 under the action of a pressure-plate 19 and torqueplate 9 pressed together by operation of a fluidpressure cylinder and piston 14, 16, is characterized in that the pads 23 have partly cylindrical back faces which seat upon correspondingly arcuate faces on the non-rotatable plates 19, 25 and 9 so that the pads 23 may rock and thereby adjust themselves to any radial unevenness in the wear of the discs 1. Instead of the arrangement shown, the pads 23 may have concave back faces that are engaged by correspondingly convex surfaces on the plates 19, 25 and 9. The construction shown includes a pivotal connection 21 between the operating rod 17 and pressure-plate 19 similar to that described in Specification 660,209. In a modification a brake having only a single set of axially-spaced discs is shown with friction pads, according to the invention, at three equiangularly spaced positions and applied by a double piston fluid-pressure actuator of the type described in Specification 631,880. The pads 23 may have a metal backing 27 bonded thereto.
