SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,722, dated May '7, 1895.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANTON BIEDERMANN, a subject of the King of Bavaria, and a resident ofAugsburg, Bavaria, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brakes for Warp-Beams of Looms, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of my invention to provide a brake for the warp beam of looms in order to retard the movement of the same, my purpose being to provide such means as will secure a uniform or even action on the beam and avoid all irregularities in the movement.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the device with parts in section. Fig. 2 is a view in detail of a modification.
The brake consists of a buckle B of which the upper and lower halves are connected on one side by means of a hinge and are kept together on the other side by a fastening comprising for instance a lever K as in Fig. l or a screw K as in Fig. 2 enabling the operator to open the brake readily.
The different layers are located inside of the buckle B as can be seen from the drawings. These consist of the upper and lower principal layers S and S of a resisting material for instance iron or steel, upon which the other layers are put, for instance the elastic layer G and the wooden layer H adapted to bear on the shaft.
In order to obtain the frictional pressure upon the shaft W of the warp beam two set screws S S are disposed the one on top and the other at the bottom of the buckle bearing, by the screwing up or unscrewing of which the layers will be more or less pressed against the shaft- The running of the shaft W is controlled by pressure through the several layers S G H, &c. It is thus that the desired tension of the threads of the warp is obtained by varying the pressure of the layers, by means of the set screws S S It will be noticed that the lower part of the buckle comprises the central portion 1 and the upwardly extendingforks 2, 2, while the upper part comprises the central portion 3 and the forks 4 4. These partsare made to conform substantially to the shape of the shaft W the opening between them however being elongated to receive the several layers of friction blocks or plates. The adjusting screws S S are carried by the central portions of the buckle sections. The important effect of this arrangement is that the adjusting screws are entirely independent of the clamping device at K and thus an additional or independent adjustment can be effected at either buckle section to press more or less on either the top or bottom of the beam.
The two parts of the clamp are hinged together at the junction of the rear forks 2 and I as in Fig. 1. The lever K engaging the hook end of the forward fork 2 clamps the parts together and any looseness may be taken up by the screws S S but ordinarily this will not be necessary.
The principal advantages which are obtained by the brake are the following: An uneven movement of the warp beam is entirely avoided because the bearing layers H rest smoothly against the shaft W and because the shocks transmitted to the shaft by the uneven working of the loom are annulled by the elastic layers G. If for an instance we use layers of wood, rubber and iron, the iron layer will transmit the pressure of the set screws to the wooden stop block which works upon the beam and the intermediate layer of rubber receives all the shocks and annuls the same by its elasticity.
The apparatus can, besides that, be constructed so that the set-screws can be loosened only by the proper screw key so that only the party that holds the key can effect the adjustment. Unexperienced or malicious regulating by the workmen cannot thus take place. The brake may be connected to any suitable part of the frame.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In combination, the shaft W, the buckle B composed of two parts hinged together, the clamping means for clamping said sections about the shaft, the friction plates or blocks and the adjusting screws S S for said blocks one for each part of the buckle to adjust the blocks independently of each other and of the clamping means, substantially as described. 2. In combination, the shaft W, the buckle comprising the two parts hinged together, the clamping means for holding them about the shaft, said buckle parts consisting of the central portions and the forks forming an elongated opening between them, the layers of friction material in the said elongated opening one of which is elastic and the screws S S passing through the central portions of the buckle parts to adjust the friction material independently, substantially as de' scribed.
