. WILLIAM LOWE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
ATTACHMENT FOR PEDALS O'F B ICYCLES, 80c.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 622,243, dated April 4, 1899.
Application filed June 2, 1896- Serial No. 593,975. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM LOWE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for the Pedals of Bicycles and Similar Vehicles,-
(for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 14,230, dated June 26, 1896,) of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to provide an attachment for the pedals of bicycles and similar vehicles which is designed to hold the same in a horizontal position in order that the feet may be applied thereto in proper position thereon at all times and with these and other objects in view; the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arran gement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
- an end view of apedal provided with my improved attachment.
In the practice of my invention I employ a pedal of any desired form, that shown in the drawing consisting of the usual side pieces 5,which areconnected by end plates 6,through which the central-pedal-shaft 7 passes, and it will be understood that the pedal turns on said shaft in the usual manner. Secured to the outer end of the shaft 7 is a clamp 8, consisting of two segmental parts which are pivotally connected at 9, and at the opposite side said segmental parts are connected by abolt 10, and one of said parts is provided with a depending arm 11, which is provided at its lower end with a plate or bar 15, which is provided with a longitudinal slot 16, and a bolt 13 is passed through said slot and through the lower end of the arm 11, and the weight 12 is connected with the end of said bolt, which passes through the slot in the plate or bar 15.
I also provide a weight 17 which is connected with the plate or bar 15 by a bolt 18, which also passes through said slot, and by means of this device the position of the weight 17 may be adjusted so as to exactly counterbalance the toe-clip 14, which is secured to one side of the pedal, and thus always hold the pedal in proper position with the toe-clip di rected upwardly. v
This device is simple in construction and operation and is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result'for which it is intended, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention. Any suitable form of toe-clip may be employed in connection with my'improvement, and my invention is not limited to the construction of the pedal or to the method of connecting the toe-clip therewith.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I 1. The herein described attachment for pedals of bicycles, comprising the clamp 8 adapted to be secured upon the pedal-shaft, said clamp consisting of two parts one of which is provided with a depending arm 11, a weight 12, secured to the lower end thereof by a bolt 13, a plate or bar 15 provided with a longitudinal slot 16 mounted upon said bolt, a second bolt 18 passing through said slot 16 and a weight 17 secured to said bolt 18, said weight 17 being longitudinally adjustable of said bar 15, and said bar 15 being adapted to be held in a horizontal position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The herein-described attachment for the pedals of bicycles and similar vehicles, comprising a clamp 8 adapted to be secured upon the pedal-shaft, said clamp consisting of two parts, one of which is provided with a depending arm 11, a plate or bar 15 provided with a longitudinal slot 16, and connected with said arm by a bolt which passes through said slot, and a weight 17, secured to said plate or bar by means of abolt 18,which passes throughv said slot, said weight being longitudinally adjustable of said plate or bar, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 28th day of May, 1896.
WILLIAM LOWE.
