PICKER STICK. No. 602,297. Patented Apr. 12,1898.

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.`
JOSEPH BEGINS, OF LISBON, MAINE.
PICKER-STICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 602,297, dated April 12, 189.8.
Application filed September 11, 1897. Serial No. 651,352. (No model.)
T a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH BEGINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lisbon, in the county of Androscoggin and Stateof Maine, have invcntedcertain new and useful Improvements in Picker-Sticks; and I do ing the loop tothe picker-stick of a loom, the
purpose of the loop being, as usual, to receive the lug-strap which passes to the sweep-stick,
the present invention consisting in providing a simple device by means of which the loop can be secured to the stick without boring holes in the latter and thereby weakening it.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a picker-stick, showing my improved loop attached. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section. Fig. 4. is a detail perspectiveview of the stirrup. Fig. 5 is a detail horizontal section showing the compression-plate in plan.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the picker-stick, provided upon one edge with a series of shoulders 2, against which a compression-plate 3 is designed to abut. The compression-plate is mounted within an elongated rectangular yoke 4, the side pieces 5 of which are received by recesses 6 in the end of the compression-plate, and the yoke is in turn provided with a tooth 7 upon the inner face of its bottom piece 8, ldesigned to bite into the edge of the picker-stick opposite the shoulders 2. The ends of the loop 9 are passed between the compression-plateand the upper end of the yoke and are firmly clamped in place by a set-screw 10, screwed throughthe top plate of the yoke and designed to pass through an aperture ll in one end of the loop and to bear down upon the lower end to perform the double function of holding the loop in place and clamping the compression-plate against the stick with sufficient force to cause the tooth carried upon the bottom of the yoke to bite the opposite side of the stick, and thereby prevent casual displacement of the parts. Ordinarily the yoke is maintained in inclined position in order to better withstand the lateral strain exerted by the pull .upon the loop incident to the tightening of the lug-strap. It will be seen that by this means the loop is firmly retained upon the pickerstick without the necessity for puncturing the latter and that it may be readily adjusted to the desired position upon the stick by loosening the set-screw and causing the yoke to be moved to bring the edge of the compressionplate against the desired shoulder, when, as we have seen, the set-screw is caused to clamp the parts securely in the adjusted position.
While the foregoing appears at this time to constitute the preferable embodiment of my invention, I do not desire to limit myself to the details of construction illustrated and described, but reserve the right to change, modify, or vary them at will within the scope of my invention.
What I vclaim is- The combination with a picker-stick provided with a series of shoulders along one edge, of a yoke surrounding the stick and provided with a tooth upon the inner face of its bottom, a compression-plate movable within the yoke, a loop retained between the compression-plate and theupper end of the yoke, and a set-screw designed to retain the loop ends and to actuate the compression-plate to retain thelatter in engagement with the shoulders upon the picker-stick, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH BEGINS.
