Be it known that I, MELVIN L. STONE, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Lowell, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Lug-Strap Holders for Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention has for its object the production of a light, strong, and serviceable lugstrap holder which can be readily appliedto the picker-stick without removing the latter from the loom and which can be easily adjusted along the stick andclamped in position without the use of bolts or screws to enter the wood. The holder is so arranged as to secure to the stick a loop of leather or other similar material, the lug-strap passing around the stick and through the loop.

By the construction to be described the weight on the picker-stick is not unduly increased and the cost of the holder is small.

The various novel features of my invention will be fully described in the subjoined specification, and particularly pointed out in the following claims.

Figure l is a front elevation of a portion of a loom picker-stick with a lug-strap holder applied thereto embodying one form of my invention, the lug-strap being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the main or body portion of the holder detached from the stick. Fig. 3 is an enlarged outer end elevation of the body portion of the holder, the clamping device being omitted. Fig. 4c is a side elevation of a modified form of holder applied to a picker-stick; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view thereof, the stick and loop being omitted.

Referring to Fig. 1, the picker-stick P, its shoe S, and the lug-strap M (see dotted lines) may be of any well-known construction.

In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 the holder comprises a stout metallic head 1, having its sides recessed to present ears 2, and holding-arms 3, loosely connected with the heads by pins L, extended through the ears 2 and the ends of the arms, the opposite free ends of the latter being bent toward each other at 5 and slightly hooked or provided with a returnbend, as 6, at their extremities. Aclamping member is mounted on the head, and I have shown the latter as provided with a boss 7 on its outer face, a threaded hole or seat 8 (see Fig. 3) extending centrally through the boss and head to receive the clamping member, shown as a screw 9, provided at its outer end with a suitable enlargement or head 10, by which it may be turned. The inner end of the screw extends between the holding-arms 3 and has loosely mounted upon it an enlarged foot 11. This foot serves as a bearing for the end of the clamping-screw, and is adapted to rest upon a loop L, of leather or other suitable material, interposed between the foot and the adjacent edge of the picker-stick, as shown in Fig. 1. A lock-nut 12 on the outer end of the screw looks it in position when set up. The arms 3 are cut away, as at 13, Fig. 2, to permit the bent ends 5 to overlap when the holder is in use. In order to apply it to the arms, either or both are swung outward, as shown by dotted lines, Fig. 2, so that they can be slipped around the picker-stick without removing it from the loom. The arms are then swung in or closed, as shown in Fig. 2, the ends 5 crossing the inner edge of the stick, and the ends of the loop L are brought up between the foot 12 and the adjacent edge of the stick. The clamping-screw 9 is now set up, and by its action the stick and the loop L are clamped firmly together and between the foot 11 and the overlapping ends of the arms 3, the holder being thereby clamped securely in desired position on the stick. The loop L sustains the lug-strap M, which passes around the stick and through the loop, as shown in Fig. 1. When the clamping is effected, the lock-nut 12 is set up and the clamping-screw is locked in operative position.

In the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5 l the head 14; has a boss 15 to receive the clamping-screw 16, substantially as before, the screw having a head 17 of a different shape and a bearing-foot 18 on its inner end to bear against the loop L. The holdingarms 19, however, are made of stout wire bent into substantially U shape and hooked at their free ends at 20 to loosely engage holes 21 made in the head near one of its sides. The arms 19 lie one above the other in this construction, whereas they are opposite each other in the form illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, said arms being connected by the bend 20 To apply the holder just described, the arms 19 are detached from the head, slipped around the picker-stick, as shown in Fig. 4, and then hooked to the head, after which the loop L is positioned and the clamping-screw is then set up and locked by the nut 22, the bend 20 resting in a groove 23 in the head. A very light holder is secured by this arrangement, the arms 19 being of less weight than the swinging arms 3 first described; but in each construction the holder is applicable to the picker-stick without removing the latter from the loom, and in both cases the holder and the lug-strap loop L are securely clamped in position on the stick.

I obviate entirely any holes, sockets, or other recesses in the picker-stick and do away with belts or screws to enter the wood thereof.

My invention is not restricted to the con struction shown and described, as the same may be modified or rearranged by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim. as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A lug-strap holder comprising a head, holding-arms loosely connected therewith and adapted to embrace a picker-stick, and a clamping member mounted on the head and having its inner end extended between said arms and adapted to bear upon a loop interposed between it and the adjacent edge of the picker-stick.

2. A lug-strap holder comprising a head, loosely-connected arms adapted to embrace a picker-stick, and a clamping member mounted on the head and extended between the arms, the picker-stick and a loop being adapted to be clamped between said clamping member and the outer ends of the arms, and means to lock said clamping member.

A lug-strap holder comprising a head, loosely-connected arms adapted to embrace a picker-stick, a clamping-screw mounted in the head between the arms and provided with an enlarged foot adapted to clamp a loop between it and the stick and thereby also clamp the holder upon the stick, and means to lock the clamping-screw.

4. A lug-strap holder comprising a head having athread ed seat therethrouglnbentholding-arms loosely connected with the head and adapted to embrace a picker-stick, a clamping-screw mounted in said seat and having its inner end extended between the arms, an enlarged foot on said inner end, and means to lock the clamping-screw in clamping position.

5. A lug-strap holder comprising a head, holding-arms loosely connected therewith at its sides, and bent to embrace a picker-stick, a clamping-screw mounted in the head, and an enlarged foot on its inner end adapted to clamp a lug-strap loop between it and the adjacent edge of the picker-stick, said clamping-screw when set up drawing the arms tightly around the stick to rigidly secure the holder thereto,

6. A lug-strap holder comprisinga metallic head having an internally-threaded boss,hold ing-arms loosely connected at one end to the head and bent at their other ends to embrace a picker-stick, a clamping-screw mounted in said boss and having its inner end extended between the arms, an enlarged bearing-foot on said inner end, and a locking device for the clamping-screw,

7. A lug-Strap holder comprising a metallic head, holding-arms pivotally connected with the sides thereof and bent toward each other at their free ends, to embrace a picker-stick, a clamping-screw mounted in the head and having its inner end extended between the arms, and an enlarged bearing-foot on said end of the screw, adapted to bear against and clamp a loop interposed between it and the adjacent edge of the stick, the bent free ends of the arms overlapping when in operative position.
